Governor Healy wants Massachusetts citizens to open their homes to an influx of migrants
Right or Requirement?
Governor Maura Healey is asking Massachusetts residents to provide “temporary” housing for migrants needing shelter.[i] It seems the forty hotels and motels being used for migrant housing and funded with our tax dollars aren’t enough.[ii] Now the Governor wants you to open your home and take strangers in. Officials have begun playing on our heartstrings by claiming that most migrants entering Massachusetts illegally are fleeing violence and seeking asylum. How long before the suggestion becomes a requirement? A bit reminiscent of the British Crown’s attitude in the not-so-distant past, wouldn’t you say?
Amendment V
No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

In the past nine months, the Customs and Border Patrol has reported that the southwestern border has encountered 494,797 family unit apprehensions (FMUA) compared to 1,194,065 single adult encounters.[iii] With the Biden administration removing the requirement to complete genetic testing on children crossing the border, we cannot honestly determine the identities of these families. How do we know these supposed family units aren’t trafficking children?
To accommodate the overflow of migrants, officials told them to go to emergency rooms because they are open 24 hours. Crowding these facilities could become a hazard for those needing medical attention. Asking residents to open their homes to migrants creates a situation where we are inviting trouble.
If state officials want their constituents to house foreign migrants, I encourage them to lead by example. A true leader resides in the trenches with those they request to fight for them, while a ruler dictates to his people—rules for thee but not for me.
