Sound of Freedom

Five years after the movie was completed and after much-unwarranted controversy, Sound of Freedom is now playing for a limited time in theaters. Tim Ballard, played by James Caviezel, is a Homeland Security agent tasked with catching pedophiles on American soil. After realizing that simply catching the pedophiles was not enough, Tim embarked on a mission to find and return children sold into slavery.

In normal times, Ballard’s story of heroism would be the focus of any Hollywood movie. However, the true stars of this film are a brother and sister tandem who are abducted early in the film, Miguel (Lucás Ávila) and his older sister Rocío (Cristal Aparicio).  The audience is thrust on a gut-wrenching emotional journey as they witness the trauma which unfolds upon these children and the hope that they will be reunited with their father.

What I appreciated about the film is that there was zero political bias (despite what you may have heard), just a story that brings awareness to the countless victims sold into child slavery. Sound of Freedom’s main protagonist Tim Ballard is easy to get behind as he brings a great deal of authenticity due to his heroic background. Over Tim’s real-life career, he has rescued hundreds of children sold into human trafficking. In 2014, while conducting an undercover operation, a woman sold Ballard two children, a brother and sister, for $15,000 each. After several unsuccessful attempts to locate the parents of the missing siblings, Ballard and his family would go on to adopt these two children.[1]

As stated in a special message by James Caviezel at the end of the movie:

“God’s children are not for sale.”
