Whether you prefer to avoid gluten or you’ve been diagnosed with Celiac Disease and must avoid gluten altogether, dining out gluten-free can feel like an uphill battle. As someone who manages Celiac Disease regularly, there have been many times I’ve planned to go out to eat but struggled to find a restaurant that strictly adheres to a gluten-free protocol. Anyone with this disease knows how annoying and frustrating it can be.

It is important to understand that gluten-free meals require separate cooking materials and tools. Even if the equipment is cleaned thoroughly between uses, gluten may still adhere to the materials and go unnoticed by the naked eye. For people with an allergy to gluten, eating gluten-contaminated food causes a reaction that can range from a stomachache and vomiting that lasts for days to anaphylaxis.

Each person is different, so it’s crucial to find a restaurant that truly understands how to cook and prepare gluten-free food. Always try to plan ahead. Check menus in advance and contact the restaurant to ask how they prepare gluten-free meals.

A website that I frequently use to narrow down the search is findmeglutenfree.com. There is also a phone app that provides a list of locations and reviews from others who have eaten there.

Good luck and safe eating!
