With spring around the corner, some gardeners are planning their potato crop. I always thought potatoes needed to be planted in rows and hilled up, but that is not the case. There are two types of potatoes: determinate and indeterminate.
Like tomatoes, indeterminate potatoes have little fibers that grow out from their stems and form new roots, and those are the potatoes you want to hill up.
Determinate potatoes do not require hilling because they only produce roots from the bottom of the plant. Depending on the variety being planted, you will want to ensure you are planting the seedlings to their required depth and that soil conditions are just right, as these potatoes will grow down beneath the surface.
Now I know what to check for when finding the right potato seedlings for my garden. Happy gardening!
