Stave off the winter blues by visiting your local indoor garden center.
I am having visions of gardens dancing in my head. What’s a gardener to do? Visit an indoor garden center! Invite a friend, make it a lunch date, and connect with someone you want to spend more time with. Connections are important.

Over the years, my garden interests have centered around having a relaxing garden retreat, with tranquility, nature, and peace right in my own backyard. This is still very important to me, and every spring, I stalk the garden centers waiting for the first sighting of pansies. The purple pansies, sprinkled with a little yellow, are my favorite.
We have grown a vegetable garden for the last two years, something we hadn’t done since the late 90s. Even with some experience, it’s a big learning curve. Our first year fell short of our production expectations, but we relished those fresh vegetables and watched them grow with curiosity and anticipation. Last year was much better. We still have much to learn, but we expect this year will be easier.

It can be daunting, but just get started! Each year of knowledge builds on the next, and we know how quickly the years go by.
Here are a few of my favorite Massachusetts garden centers:
Winchester – Mahoney’s, 242 Cambridge Street
Bedford – New England Nurseries, 216 Concord Road
Danvers – Kane’s Flower World, 64 Andover Street
Rowley – Country Gardens, 157 Central Street
Ipswich – Wolf Hill Garden Center, 60 Turnpike Road
And don’t forget that lunch date, there are great local restaurants in each of these towns.
