Republican State Committee members met on September 21, 2023, to decide on the 2024 Primary delegate selection and allotment rules. 2020’s winner-take-all model will remain in place[i]. However, the threshold to earn delegates has been lowered from 20% to 10%. This will spread the wealth, so to speak, of allotted delegates should no candidate achieve a majority of the votes.

Chairperson Carnevale hopes the lower threshold will lure the other Republican candidates to campaign in the state. But she is also considering charging the candidates up to $20,000 to appear on the primary ballot. That’s chump change for the well-funded campaigns, but it seems like an overt move to squeeze cash from candidates to pay off some of the Mass GOP’s current debt.

Trump is polling very high in Massachusetts,[ii] and his popularity is only growing with the flailing campaigns of his opponents. He should have no problem winning the majority of primary votes, barring any Mass GOP shenanigans.
