The title of this recipe has been known to raise eyebrows and cause excitement among wine enthusiasts. Wine pizza has been my husband’s birthday dinner since he was a child, no doubt because he thought he was getting away with something. Kids aren’t allowed to have wine!
Adding a dry red wine to homemade or canned tomato sauce, slow simmered until reduced to a thick pizza sauce, makes for an amazingly simple yet upscale artisan pizza. Like one you might order at a fancy brick oven pizzeria on Newbury Street.
Set your expectations to delicious, and you won’t be disappointed.
Wine Pizza Sauce
Ingredients:
½ cup dry red wine
8 oz. can tomato sauce (or homemade sauce)
2 tbsp. dried minced onion
½ tsp. dried basil
½ tsp. oregano
½ tsp. Worcestershire sauce
*Fresh ingredients can always be substituted for dried or canned, making it even more delicious! Make sure to use the equivalent measurements.
Directions:
Combine all ingredients
Bring to a low boil
Reduce to simmer and continue until reduced to 1 cup
*The recipe yields enough sauce for a couple of 14-inch pizzas, depending on how saucy you like your pie. It can be doubled, and any leftover sauce can be frozen for later use on a pizza or added to your next spaghetti sauce batch.
