The Haverhill Preliminary Mayoral Election is Tuesday September 12, 2023
A look at the issues according to Haverhill Mayoral Candidate
George Eleftheriou

Background:
George Eleftheriou arrived in Haverhill at 13 when his parents immigrated from Greece. He graduated from Haverhill High School and Northern Essex Community College, after which he opened a restaurant, GNP Pizzeria, in Hampstead, New Hampshire. A fire forced him to move the business to Chester, New Hampshire, where it is today. He has also donated his time, money, and effort to the Lions in Hampstead and the Boys Club in Chester.
Public safety: Elefheriou has not articulated a policy on police, fire, or crime. We would welcome his opinion as a supplement to this piece..
Economic development: Eleftheriou proposes a unique means of helping lower-income residents find employment – donating cars to the city. The city would then enlist technical schools and mechanics to donate their time to repair cars as needed. Then, these cars would be used as transportation to jobs for those needing transportation. He also suggests creating events on the Merrimac River, such as a race from Haverhill to Newburyport and sprints between bridges in Haverhill. He also advocates extending the river walk to enhance viewing.
Education: Eleftheriou is concerned about working conditions for teachers, a shortage of teachers, and a declining number of teacher applications. Increasing teacher applications is a priority on his agenda. He has stated that the Department of Education is creating the curricula, not the teachers.
Infrastructure: Elefheriou has expressed concern over the cost of the clean water project for the Merrimac River. He believes people need to understand the importance of a cleaner Merrimac River to the city. He has expressed a need to upgrade the city’s dog park by providing water stations and shady areas. He’s also suggested better lighting to provide security for those who use the park at night.
Housing: Eleftheriou has suggested modifications in real estate tax tiers. He wants to see tax rates frozen for retirees who have lived in their house for a long time (time not specified yet). He also suggested creating a sub-commercial rate for landlords.
