There are several ways to enjoy Savoy Mountain State Forest. We spent a weekend there camping with three kids and a dog.

North Pond is a serene spot for contemplation and pleasant for a late evening swim. Several hiking trails of different lengths are available, but our favorite (and longest) was a collection of trails that led us to Tannery Falls, an 80-foot series of tumbling falls ending in a lovely little pool. We enjoyed a picnic lunch on one of the several picnic tables dappling the area and then hiked along the river for a while to see the other falls.

On the way back to the campground, we passed a set of gravestones inside a low rock wall that could have been the foundation of an old homestead.

At night, we stargazed on the open hill in the middle of the campground, unhindered by the “light noise” of modern life.
