Healy appeals to the federal government for an “intervention” and to the citizens of Massachusetts for “compassion”
On Tuesday, August 8th, 2023, Governor Maura Healey declared a state of emergency due to the surge of migrants arriving in Massachusetts. Healey stated that close to 5,600 families with children live in state-funded facilities across the Commonwealth, which is said to be 80% higher than just one year ago. Healey admitted that there are more families than our state has ever served. The governor said that the migrants were fleeing extreme danger in their home countries and encouraged the citizens of Massachusetts to sit and talk to them to hear their stories. Healey noticeably left out how to verify the accuracy of each of these stories.
With migrant families arriving daily, there was no mention of DNA testing to certify that these children are indeed belonging to the adults they are with. Healey also formally appealed to the federal government for additional funding and assistance. The governor wants to expedite work permits for migrants and pleaded with individuals and companies to help by donating to a fund to provide financial security to migrants. The plea to host families was again placed out to the public. Unfortunately, there was no clear indication from the Governor of how Massachusetts will withstand the migrant influx problem from this point forward.
