Healey cries for help. Massachusetts can’t afford “Right to Shelter”.

As of July 2023, approximately 316,000 illegal immigrants reside in Massachusetts. Due to the alarming rise and lack of shelter, sources close to Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey said she is prepared to announce an emergency declaration sometime this week.

Massachusetts is the only state in the country with a “Right to Shelter” law, and is required to provide housing and assistance to migrant families. Massachusetts has already been providing the use of almost forty hotels/motels to migrants as well as using college dormitories for temporary housing. Migrant shelters and amenities are all paid for by the taxpayers. In July of 2023, Healey asked residents to consider becoming host families to provide temporary housing to migrants seeking shelter. There are currently fifteen to twenty host families in Massachusetts.

When Healey took office, Massachusetts was housing 388 families in motels, but that number has since increased to 1,382. In May 2023, the Healey administration estimated that they would need to meet the needs to serve an additional 338 families every month for fiscal year 2024. Governor Healy’s projection led her to propose a whopping $324 million in the 2024 budget, which would provide 4,755 shelter units. A possible emergency declaration would allow Healey to receive federal funds and help with this crisis. But how much additional funding will we need to provide in the fiscal year 2025 to maintain the existing shelters and provide additional funding for new ones?
