There is a location that those who dwell in Worcester County often speak about when the opportunity for adventure arises. To the average person not from the area, the terrain may just look like a bunch of rocks in a forest. Those close to Sutton, MA, have no doubt sought the wonder and grand exploration that Purgatory Chasm offers.

Purgatory’s rocky chasm, which is 70 feet deep, is home to many unusually named caves, trenches, and markers.  With ominous and foreboding designations such as Devil’s Pulpit, Lover’s Leap, and Devil’s Coffin, visitors from all over are invited to explore these curious rock-strewn structures. Many families, couples, and those just searching for something unique to experience are often drawn to Purgatory Chasm. For those seeking more of a hike rather than a climb, Purgatory Chasm has several trails which take you all over the surrounding woodland area. The location is (leashed) dog friendly, so please feel free to allow your canine companion to travel with you as you explore the trails, streams, and beautiful sites.

People with kids fear not. Purgatory has a visitor center providing indoor bathrooms and a decent-sized playground providing cool-down areas after a family outing. If you are looking for a well-maintained and controlled environment to greet the outdoors, you cannot do much better than Purgatory Chasm, located off Route 146 at 198 Purgatory Road in Sutton, Massachusetts.
